The Great Smoky Mountains is truly a photographer’s paradise offering a wide-range of photographic opportunities. Shooting in the spring, offers a favorable time to capture the best locations from classic mountain vistas, to flowing streams and waterfalls, to some wildlife, and perhaps even a bear. The Great Smoky Mountains offers something for everyone.
Adam Jones, Canon Explorer of Light and internationally award winning photographer of nature and wildlife photography, is well known for his stock images and is also known as a top nature photography teacher. With over twenty years of experience exploring the best shooting locations the Great Smoky Mountains has to offer, Jones will share his favorite spots during this workshop.
Each day will feature photography field sessions during the ideal light of sunrise and sunset. During the day, we will meet for classroom instruction covering a variety of skills to enhance your photography such as how to create depth in your images and image workflow. Students will also learn how to properly expose and create artistically designed images. Adam will demonstrate his post processing techniques for landscape photography. He will also offer reviews of your images with feedback on what you did well and what could be improved.
Also included in the workshop fee, is the opportunity to try out different EOS Bodies and EF lenses. The Canon gear we provide for students to learn and experiment with will only further enhance this experience.
The workshop is limited to 16 students, so you will have plenty of attention and support from Mr. Jones and one of our highly skilled Canon Technical Specialists, who will help you in both the field and the classroom. We will carpool to our shooting locations. We don’t need to travel far from our vehicle, so bring any useful lens, if not needed it can be left in the car as we shoot. Almost no hiking required.
During this workshop, you will shoot elbow to elbow in the field with Jones learning his award winning techniques. A sample of topics that we will concentrate on during classroom and field sessions include:
- Creative Depth of Field and Motion
- Flash Basics for nature
- Creating dramatic images using composition and lighting
- Understanding HDR and learning how to stack images as well as stitching them
- Long Exposure Motion treatments for capturing moving water
- Image workflow from capture to print
- Recognizing and evaluating a situation/learning to see like a pro
- Getting the right exposure: basic principles and adjusting the histogram
Please bring a range of lenses from wide angle zoom to telephoto, you will use them all. Backup camera if you have one. The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is Adam’s camera of choice, but he will be teaching photography principals that apply to any camera body and lenses.
Don’t’ forget plenty of charged battery packs and memory cards. A sturdy tripod and electronic camera release are highly recommended. And be sure to bring a laptop computer for downloading images. You will have the opportunity to submit images to the on-site technical representative, who will make one or two prints for you to take home.
A firm understanding of your camera operations including using manual mode, f-stops and shutter speed is needed. This workshop is for intermediate and advanced photographers. Please read the agenda to understand the workshop outline.
