Capturing Inspiration is a seminar series from Canon Burbank designed to inspire industry professionals. Covering a wide range of topics from the technical to the creative, Capturing Inspiration gives all corners of the filmmaking community a platform to discuss topics and ideas that motivate them.
In the last 10 years, advancing camera technology has made possible an image quality filmmakers in the 90s could only dream about, and never before has there been a plethora of cameras and tools available to cinematographers. Big cameras, small cameras, cameras designed for spherical, cameras designed for anamorphic, cameras designed to see in the dark and cameras designed for large-scale production. All of these options can be overwhelming and there is no perfect camera, only the right tool for the job. Join Director/Director of Photography Joshua Caldwell as he explores his multitude of recent productions where he did just that: used the right tool for the job. He shot his first feature film LAYOVER on the EOS 5D Mark II and just completed his third feature using the EOS C100 Mark II. From lowlight/no-light production with the ME20F-SH to using available light with the EOS C300 Mark II on the streets of Mexico City or down and dirty guerilla production with the EOS C700, Joshua is all about embracing the right camera for your shoot and pushing them to their limits.
In this two-hour seminar, Joshua will discuss his approach to filmmaking using Canon cameras, the benefits to each camera system as well as how and why he makes his final camera choice. He’ll cover guerilla production using natural light and small crews and why the architecture of Canon cameras are so valuable to his process. Comparing both on-set and post-production workflows, Joshua will also talk about utilizing multiple cameras on the same project to get the best of both worlds.
Then, join Joshua the following Saturday for his hands-on workshop at Canon Burbank where he will work with a small group of students and puts the concepts discussed here into action by shooting multiple scenes with the group. For more information about the hands-on workshop, follow this link.
