In 2010, Jessica had been working as a photographer for many years and had no intention of working in filmmaking. But with the arrival of the Canon EOS 5D Mark ll, she was able to take a camera she was comfortable with and begin to shoot video. Her first film, WITHOUT, directed by Mark Jackson, was a feature length narrative film that she was able to shoot on a low budget. Despite it's small budget, the film went on to win more than 15 awards, including an Independent Spirit Award, the Kodak Award for Best Cinematography and extensive critical acclaim. Much of its success centered on the look and intimacy of the visuals. Utilizing the Canon equipment and technology played a critical role in the film’s acclaim. Since then, Dimmock has directed a feature length documentary, shot for several network series, and currently directing an episodic documentary series for Netflix.
This lecture is meant to discuss the organic and exciting overlap between these two disciplines, and encourage people with a background in photography to think about their potential in film work.
Jessica Dimmock is the recipient of numerous international awards for her photography and video work, including 2 World Press Photo Awards for short films, The Inge Morath Award from Magnum, the F Award for Concerned Photography from Forma and Fabrica, The Infinity Award for Photojournalist of the Year from the International Center of Photography, and The Kodak Award for Best Cinematography at the Hamptons International Film Festival. She is a Sundance Edit and Story Lab Fellow, and her first feature film The Pearl (co-directed by Christopher LaMarca) was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Dallas International Film Festival and executive produced by Impact Partners. Her clients include HBO, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Microsoft, The UNFPA, Aperture, Showtime and PBS. She is currently co-directing an episodic documentary series for Netflix.
