Tonight Meena Singh and director Kelly Loudenberg will discuss their collaboration on lensing Netflix’s current episodic “Confession Tapes” on Canon’s EOS C300 Mark ll and our cinema zooms. Cinematographer Meena Singh comes from a narrative background, but documentary filmmaking fulfills the need to create a social impact in a way narrative rarely can. She will discuss how she uses her narrative filmmaking skills to make the most compelling images and scenes, the importance of being patient and timely, allowing the story to be crafted, in this highly acclaimed new episodic Netflix program.
Kelly & Meena will share their process in designing the visuals of the show; original look book, re-creation B roll, how to film 6 complex murder cases in over 15 cities in 50 days -, capturing sensitive interviews in the moment, true run and gun documentary filmmaking.
Synopsis: The Confession Tapes is a true crime conceptual documentary series created and directed by Kelly Loudenberg. Exploring criminal cases in which people have confessed to crimes they claim they did not commit, each episode is structured around the taped interrogation. The interrogator's voice is the narrative foil that springboards into present day interviews, archival media coverage, and court proceedings. The interrogation video acts as a structural spine, threaded throughout, showing how different narratives emerge over time.
