Canon’s E-TTL flash system is one of the most popular “next steps” for creative EOS photographers, but even experienced pros can find they need a little guidance to really understand its workings. Canon USA’s Rudy Winston will be on-hand to follow-up on his successful presentation on the fundamentals of E-TTL flash. This time, there will be emphasis on real hands-on application of flash and camera control.
We’ll begin with a series of quick and simple group exercises, reinforcing a true understanding of ambient and flash control with E-TTL. But the real beauty of E-TTL begins when you take a flash off-camera, so the next step is a series of exercises and actual shooting scenarios to give you a working understanding of the power of a single flash when it’s away from the hot shoe. We’ll explain and work with the options your camera offers, from optical Wireless E-TTL triggered by the built-in flash to Canon’s powerful radio-based Wireless flash. And from there, we’ll introduce attendees to the real power of Canon’s Wireless E-TTL: working with multiple flashes off-camera. You’ll learn about control of “master” and “slave” flash units in a wireless set-up; we’ll compare both the optical and radio-based Wireless E-TTL systems from a real-world perspective, and have shooting situations where you can work with flash ratios, placement of speedlites off-camera, and apply some of the afore-mentioned fundamentals such as when and when not to include ambient light in an image. And along the way, we’ll introduce ideas of how to make this off-camera lighting visually interesting; with simple and affordable light modifiers and techniques.
You may be an EOS enthusiast with a single speedlite, or possibly a more advanced user with several speedlites in the equipment bag. Either way, this morning’s session is time well spent to really review the fundamentals of E-TTL, giving you full and total image control whether you’re in a multiple-flash set-up or shooting with just a single flash on-camera. And we’ll open your eyes to some of what’s possible when you begin to work with Wireless E-TTL.
Your camera; at least one EX-series Speedlite (E-TTL compatible); fresh batteries for both (and spares for the flash); a standard lens (zoom or fixed focal length… feel free to bring extra lenses, if you want). If you own multiple Canon speedlites and/or a Speedlite Transmitter, those will be useful, too. We recommend you label such gear with your name or other method to verify your gear when we’re done.
We recommend an understanding of basic camera operation, including being able to change your camera’s exposure modes, apply both ambient and flash exposure compensation, and set shutter speeds & apertures with camera in Manual exposure mode. And, an understanding of basic photographic exposure fundamentals… effects of lens apertures, shutter speeds, and so on.
