Roy will describe the various methods he uses to capture images of wild hummingbirds in flight. Scenarios include ambient lighting as well as simple to exotic flash lighting. He will discuss how great results can be achieved with a modicum of gear, and then what is required to produce exquisite results. Focus will be on technique rather than technology, however Roy will stress the phenomenal AF abilities of the Pro EOS line of Canon cameras, particularly the EOS-1D X Mark II and the EOS 5DS R – both of which he uses regularly. He will also allude to the relatively new arena of ‘camera trapping’ for bird photography – he has developed his own gear for this over the years, but now uses some game-changing technology that is available commercially.
The emphasis of his hummingbird photography is varied: 1) Under no circumstances will he coerce or cajole the subjects for ‘the shot’ 2) He works extremely hard to create lighting that appears natural 3) He likes to mix science with art to produce an aesthetic result 4) Roy loathes computers, so gets as much right in the frame as possible. 5) No elements are altered in his images other than dust spots, contrast and color balance. He believes strongly that image manipulation should be revealed whenever it is employed.
