Photographing the clear nighttime sky is something that you will likely never forget. Please join Canon Explorer of Light Ken Sklute, as he leads you to unique locations in the park to capture remarkable images under the nighttime sky.
We have selected a very particular time of the month to give you the opportunity to capture the nighttime sky in all of its glory. We will be under a New Moon (which is extremely dark) to capture the Milky Way at its best and the last time for 2017.
It will be an incredible time to photograph the thickest parts of the Milky Way, as well as creating time lapses of star trails to detail the earth’s rotation.
This workshop will be in Joshua Tree National Park, near Twentynine Palms, CA. We will meet at the Twentynine Palms Holiday Inn Express. We will begin with a classroom lecture so that we will all be knowledgeable on creating images from ordinary to extraordinary. A dinner, hosted by Canon will follow before we journey outside into the park to create imagery.
All attendees are responsible for their own travel, lodging, and meals (excluding the hosted dinner). In order to minimize our impact on park premises, we will be organizing a carpool for all attendees.
Be prepared for a beautiful night in the desert. This class will be limited to 16 attendees to make sure that there is no overcrowding and plenty of one-on-one time while making your captures.

What To Bring:
Camera and lenses – Bring lenses that are wide and with large apertures. Below are a few recommendations:
EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM
EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM
EF16-35mm f/2.8L III USM
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
A sturdy tripod that has an appropriate weight rating for your camera and lens. Please be sure that it is a sturdy tripod because we plan on taking photos with exposure durations of 10 seconds and greater. The slightest movement of a weak tripod will produce soft images.
Batteries for your camera – Shooting long exposures will use more battery power. Be sure to bring extra batteries!
Media cards – Bring at least 64 GBs of memory. More is always better as you don’t want to be out shooting and run out of space.
Cable Release / Intervalometer – In order to create time-lapses, you will need an intervalometer such as the Canon TC-80N3. Some cameras have this function built in, be sure to check your manual.
Headlamp with the red light mode.
Sturdy shoes with good grips. Be sure to check the weather report and dress appropriately.
