When a company that has already sold over 100 million EF lenses since 1987 gets so excited over a brand new lens, they break into spontaneous applause at an unveiling event and you just know it’s big deal. In fact, it’s an even bigger deal considering that Canon had to create an entirely new lens category, the Cine Servo Lens, to fit the new, incredible CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 PL and CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 EF lenses into the Canon lens family.
The CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 PL and CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 EF lenses offer 4K quality with a Full-Frame 35mm image circle, removable servo motor for quick studio-style conversion, 11 Iris Blades for artistic and beautiful representation of out-of-focus areas or “Bokeh,” electronic lens communication with the body, a 180º smooth rotating focus ring, and weighs only 6.4 pounds. The addition of a removable drive unit enables the lens to be used in both traditional cinema setups and broadcast applications. By installing the drive unit, the operability and applicability of this lens is comparable to a conventional ENG lens. The addition of the CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 PL and CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 EF has evolved Canon’s cinema lens series to function in an increasingly diverse and professional manner, expanding on the possibilities of the Cinema EOS system.
Canon is proving their commitment to the needs of the high-end market by listening and releasing the CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 PL and CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 EF. This lens gives the end-user more control over their images by having appropriate focal lengths for a multitude of scenarios. Canon Cinema lenses provide the highest performance in contemporary 4K/2K and HD motion-imaging and are engineered to meet the most demanding imaging requirements of the latest large-format digital video cameras.
A focal range from 17-120mm enables the Canon CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 to tackle a variety of shooting situations.
The Canon CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 is designed to provide the utmost optical performance and is capable of full 4K-Resolution performance. Whether you’re shooting in HD on a Canon Cinema EOS C100 or C300, or creating a cinematic masterpiece in 4K using an EOS C500 Digital Cinema Camera, the Canon CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 provides uncompromising image quality, contrast and color fidelity.
The Canon CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 is available in a choice of either EF or PL mount. A genuine Canon EF mount will work with all Cinema EOS camera models equipped with an EF mount. The PL-mount option will work with any PL mount camera.
The EF mount has electronic contacts on both the lens and camera sides that allow direct communication between each device. This communication allows lens metadata including T-numbers to be displayed in the viewfinder.
The use of an 11-blade iris produces artistic and beautiful out-of-focus areas or “Bokeh.” The 11 blades allow for attractive circular blurring in out-of-focus regions, while the use of an odd number of blades reduces flaring of specular highlights. Additionally, the iris ring is mechanically controlled with no click stops for smooth exposure adjustments while recording.
This existing broadcast standard enables zoom, focus, and iris position data and iris mode operations to be transmitted to compatible cameras. This feature is similar to that of other lenses in this class.
Focus, zoom, and iris position and model data are transmitted, and lens information can be recorded or displayed at the transmission destination. This function is only available when the removable drive unit is installed and power is supplied.
Compatible with EOS C100, C300, C500 and EOS-1D C (EOS-1D C in Super 35mm crop shooting only): Focal lengths, iris info, and lens model name are recorded, and f-value is information can be displayed at the transmission destination. In addition, Peripheral Illumination can be compensated.
Weatherproof and shock-proof construction allows this lens to perform in even harsh shooting conditions.
By incorporating a removable drive unit, the lens can be used in either an ENG or cinema shooting style. This allows for greater shooting flexibility in a variety of situations.
Gear placement is optimized for use with cinema-style follow focus rigs with the drive unit removed. Lens support shaft is compatible with 19mm rod systems common in cinema camera rigs.
