Understanding Paper Sizes with the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000

April 13, 2016

Paper size standards can vary around the world. This quick reference will help you to under-stand the common paper sizes that are included in the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printer driver, as well as the margin options and the recommended printing area for each paper size.

Borderless Printing

The borderless printing option allows you to make prints with no white border for selected paper types. When you use borderless printing, you may see slight image cropping because the printer driver will enlarge the image to fill the page size. You may also see a reduction in print quality at the top and bottom of the page. Also, borderless printing on thick paper may smudge the front or back surface of the paper.

To specify the amount of image area that will extend off of the paper, select Page Processing in the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000, select the borderless option for your desired page size, and then use the slider to define the borderless extension.

The following paper types are compatible with borderless printing:

  • Photo Paper Pro Platinum
  • Photo Paper Plus Glossy
  • Photo Paper Pro Luster
  • Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss
  • Matte Photo Paper
25mm margins

Some thick papers are more prone to rub against the print head, causing smudging at the top or bottom of the print, and potential damage to the print head. To avoid this, select the 25 mm page size to allow the printer more space to keep the paper tightly in place while printing.

Photo Sizes

These sizes are commonly used in photographic printing and correspond to many commercially available photo frames. All of these sizes have a borderless printing option.

"A" Sizes

A (ARCH) size papers adhere to international standards in their dimensions and are commonly used throughout Europe and Asia. As the size number increases, the dimensions de-crease. These sizes maintain consistent proportions because the long side of the previous size becomes the short side, and the new long side is double the previous short side. For example, A4 is 21 centimeters by 29.7 centimeters, and A3 is 29.7 centimeters by 42 centimeters.
