Canon celebrates 100 Million lenses, launches new stage at NAB

April 15, 2014

The annual NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) tradeshow featured a celebration for Canon’s 100 millionth EF lens, demonstrations of Canon equipment and a new speaker stage for the CDLC.

This year will mark production of the 100 millionth EF lens in the world since 1987. Over the decades, Canon has made multiple milestones in the image-making industry, such as creating the world’s first Optical Image Stablilizer in 1995, and the first lens for circular and rectangular full-frame fisheye photos in 2011.

Demonstrations with EF lenses, as well as our Cinema lenses, took place around our booth. Visitors were able to touch and try our DSLR cameras, high definition camcorders and Cinema EOS cameras at our different counters and sets to test out the features and capabilities of each.

One of the newer features, which will be available May 2014, is the Dual Pixel CMOS AF feature upgrade for the EOS C300. Just like in the EOS 70D, this upgrade offers a seamless focus search and lock without touching the lens. We demonstrated this feature at the new CDLC Education Studio stage where our own technical advisor, Brent Ramsey, and Explorer of Light Vincent Laforet did a live demo with it, using a Movi.

Other presenters at our stage included Canon technical advisor, Rudy Winston, Saturday Night Live’s Cinematographer Alex Buono, Canon In Action Tour instructor Amina Moreau, Suny Behar, editor Jon Carr and Canon guru Larry Thorpe. Behar, who presented on the capabilities of 80,000 ISO in our C300, livened up the crowd by bringing a famous character to light – no pun intended.

Around the booth, live demonstrations by John Huba, Michael Ori and Explorer of Light, Michele Celentano, taught users how to extract still images from 4K video while using the EOS-1D C. Other 4K content was also available to be seen – such as the DP-V3010 display unit, footage in our Canon Theater, our 4K DI (Digital Intermediate) suite and more.

Several announcements had been made in time for NAB, like the new CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 PL lens, CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 EF lens, XF205 HD Camcorder, XF200 HD Camcorder and the Cinema Membership for CPS (Canon Professional Services) program (who also had their own hospitality suite at the show). Let’s see what awaits us next year.
